Communication Square

Every message carries four messages at once.

The Communication Square is based on Schulz von Thun's Four-Sides Model. Every message carries four messages potentially — and this is true for both the sender and the listener. The sender speaks with four "beaks": they share facts, reveal something of themselves, express their relationship to the listener, and make an appeal. The listener, in turn, hears with four "ears": they take in the facts, sense the self-revelation, read the relationship, and perceive the appeal. In any real moment, however, certain beaks and certain ears are especially attuned — shaped by context, personality, history, and the relationship; not all four sides are equally loud. When the emphasis sent on one side differs from the emphasis heard on another — or a faintly sent side lands loudly on a particularly attuned ear — misunderstandings arise. This tool explores a statement from both directions so you can reflect on what may be happening beneath the words.

The four sides of a message

For each side, the tool shows what the sender may be sending (their "beak") and what a receiver may hear (their "ear") — because the model applies to both parties. Every message carries all four dimensions potentially, yet in any real situation certain beaks and certain ears are especially attuned — shaped by context, personality, history, and the relationship. What is strongly sent on one side may be barely heard, and what is faintly sent may land loudly on a particularly attuned ear. These are possibilities for reflection — never the speaker's true intention.

What this tool is — and is not

  • It offers perspectives for reflection and for further discussion with a coach. It is not a coaching app and does not give advice.
  • Interpretations are hypotheses, not the speaker's true intention. Several readings may be plausible.
  • It does not diagnose, assess, or recommend a course of action.
  • It does not replace a conversation with a qualified professional.
