Systemic Coaching

Systemic coaching is an approach that views individuals not in isolation, but as part of interconnected systems — families, teams, organisations, and cultures. Rather than focusing solely on the person, it explores how relationships, roles, and context shape behaviour and possibilities.

01

What it is

Systemic coaching draws from systems theory, which holds that any individual is embedded within multiple overlapping systems. Change in one part of a system ripples outward, and behaviour that seems puzzling when viewed in isolation often makes sense when the broader context is considered.

Key principles include circularity (each element influences and is influenced by others), emergence (new patterns arise from interactions rather than individual parts), and wholeness (the system is more than the sum of its parts). Coaches trained in this approach pay close attention to language, roles, loyalties, and hidden dynamics that may be shaping a client's situation.

02

How it is used in coaching

In practice, a systemic coach helps clients map the systems they inhabit — their team, family, organisation, or professional network — and identify invisible patterns or loyalties that may be limiting growth. Tools include constellation work, role-playing, and reflective questioning that opens up the wider field of influence around a presenting issue.
